Top Six Things to Consider When Planning Your Wedding
After many, many, many weddings and events planned and created to perfection with Walkabout Creek, our wedding and event coordinator Caitlin Willliamson is an expert when it comes to ensuring your big day goes smoothly from start to finish. Having helped dozens of couples plan their dream wedding, her insights into the planning process could fill a bridal magazine, but of the hundreds of details that need to be considered, she has six important things that should be at the top of the list.
#1. Menu Trends
Consider food trends when planning your wedding menu, and incorporate things that you and your fiance love. It’s important to cater for your guests but your wedding should be a reflection of you as a couple and the things you both enjoy.
Some unique options to try are food stations – antipasto and cheese tables are a great alternative to canapes and look amazing when set out in a rustic style. Think wooden boards, fresh herbs and lots of colour for an option that will be both enjoyed and look amazing in your photos!
Why not try a dessert station instead of a plated option? You can incorporate your cake as well as mini versions of your favourite dessert for guests to enjoy between all the dancing.
#2. Beverage Menu
An arrival cocktail or mocktail adds fun and colour to any wedding. You could even consider doing this before the ceremony so that guests can feel refreshed during the vows.
Carry your wedding theming over to a mocktail station, with things like straws, jars and tablecloths in keeping with your colour scheme
If a beverage package doesn’t include your favourite beverage, ask the venue or caterer if there is any flexibility with options for drinks like a special champagne for toasts to the bride and groom
#3. Catering for dietary requirements
Make sure you ask your guests for dietary requirements when sending out invitations
Consider choosing menu items to cover dietary requirements, as most venues will have a menu that covers common dietary needs like gluten free, dairy free and vegetarian.
#4. Wet weather option for outdoor ceremony locations
If you’re booking an outdoor ceremony location, make sure you have a good back up plan in place in the case of rain
No one wants rain on their wedding day but it’s important to be prepared, so have some clear umbrellas as a just in case option for photos and any walking to and from venue locations that might be required
#5. Choosing the right venue
Choose a venue that suits the style of wedding you and your partner like, for example, if you are choosing a rustic style venue, stick with neutral earthy colours and bring in pops of colours with flowers.
Make sure that your guest number fits comfortably seated or standing in the venue, you don’t want guests to be crammed into a space that is too small.
Work with the venue’s preferred stylist and preferred suppliers wherever possible, as they will have a good knowledge of the venue and what works, in the layout of the rooms
If you’re planning a marquee, bear in mind that it is often not a cheaper option.
Marquee weddings look amazing but essentially requires the building of a venue, so there are a lot of components like hiring chairs, tables, linen, cutlery and glassware, and possibly generators if the site has no power, that may be required. If you are having an outdoor ceremony and a marquee wedding reception, make sure the marquee is large enough to hold your ceremony and pre dinner drinks inside in the case of rain (and check that a floor is included in your price).
#6. Venue hire time
Find out when you will have access for set up and pack down – will it be the day before or the day of, and do all your items need to be taken away the night of the wedding?
Make sure if it’s on the day you organise a friend or family member to set up, and allocate someone to look after the pack up of decorations and left over cake once the bride and groom have departed.
If the venue hire only covers a certain amount of hours, find out how much is it to extend the party time and beverage package if you know your guests will want to continue the celebrations, and if there are noise restrictions after a certain time, or bar closing times.
